The skin is the body’s largest organ. It receives one third of all the blood that is circulated in the body. Therefore the skin should eliminate about one third of all the body’s wastes each day. The skin is a main organ of detoxification, when other organs involved with the elimination of toxins are overburdened, the skin may also become overloaded.
Benefits of Regular Dry Skin Brushing
- It will help to remove dead layers of skin, improving the health of your skin.
- It will increase the blood circulation to the skin and the underlying organs and tissues.
- It will help the skin’s abilities to eliminate toxic materials.
- Helps with muscle tone and more even distribution of fat deposits.
- Increases lymphatic circulation.
- Gentle pressure provides a calming effect.
It needs to be done regularly for several months for full benefits. The only tool needed is a soft, dry, skin brush; preferably with natural bristles and a long handle (nylon bristles may damage the skin).
How to Dry Brush
Instructions
- Your skin and dry brush should be completely dry.
- Begin initially brushing gently, avoiding broken skin. The entire procedure should take about 9 minutes.
- Begin with your hands and fingers by brushing back and forth 7 times on each finger and both sides of your hand.
- Next, brush the bottom of each foot 7 times back and forth and then the tops of your toes. Brush around each ankle.
- Now, begin the rest of our body by brushing from the ankle up towards the knee 7 times each; brush the knees in a circular motion all around.
- At the base of the neck (in the back) grasp the brush with both hands and brush side to side then up and down.
- In the front of the neck, brush from the ear towards the front toward the sternal notch or just below the Adam’s apple. This helps stimulate the thymus gland helping to strengthen your immune system.
- Do not brush your chest.
- For the lymphatic system, brush your armpits in a circular motion 7 times.
- Brush your groin area in a circular motion 7 times.
- Next, brush up and down starting under the arm to the waist and your abdomen side to side and in a circular motion 7 times.
- With both hands, grasp the brush behind you and brush up and down the mid back.
- With the same motion brush the upper back.
- In a circular motion brush your hips and thighs 7 times each.
- When you are finished, take an Epsom salt bath.
Congratulations! You have just completed your dry brushing! My favorite thing to do following dry brushing is a long, hot Epsom salt bath.
The human body has 4 circulatory systems: blood, nerve impulses, lymph, and energy (Qi). The lymphatic system includes a vast network of capillaries that transport the lymph. A series of nodes throughout the body (primarily in the neck, groin, and armpits) collect the lymph; and 3 organs – the tonsils, spleen, and thymus gland produce white blood cells (lymphocytes), vital to the immune system.
The space between cells occupies about 18% of the body. Lymph, a fluid containing plasma, proteins, foreign particles and bacteria that accumulates in these spaces between cells. Thus the purpose of the lymphatic system is to collect the lymph and to return its contents to the bloodstream. More specifically, the lymph system collects waste products and cellular debris from the tissues.
The lymph flows slowly upward through the body up to the chest (at the rate of 3 quarts per 24 hours) where it drains into the bloodstream through two large ducts. Lymph also flows down from the head and neck into this drainage site. Unlike the heart, the lymphatic system does not have a pump to move it along; rather, its movement depends on such factors as muscle contraction or manual manipulation. The lymph circulation is also a one-way circulation – it only returns fluid to the bloodstream. The lymph system becomes particularly active during times of illness (such as the flu), when the nodes (particularly at the throat) visibly swell with collected waste products.
